The Hidden Beauty of Vargiani: A Sanctuary in Parnassus

As you ascend the magical Parnassus, nestled amidst lush greenery, the subtle sounds of animals, and the irresistible scents of wildflowers, a beautiful village proudly stands at an altitude of 900 meters, overlooking the dense forests of the mountain.

Vargiani isn't one of those famous, bustling tourist destinations. It's actually a well-kept secret sanctuary, a hidden gem that those who frequently travel to Fokida, and more specifically to the western side of Parnassus, know well and cherish. Its beautiful, small square, shaded by the cool canopy of plane trees, the old aqueduct that still stands proudly today, and the village's folklore museum are just a few of the reasons to make a stop at this treasure on your next mountain getaway.

Leaving behind the much more popular settlements of Amfikleia and Gravia, with their warm, welcoming guesthouses and lively tourist activity, you'll suddenly spot the sign leading to picturesque Vargiani. The central square welcomes you with open arms, inviting you to sit down for a steaming Greek coffee, accompanied by a homemade spoon sweet. After enjoying this sweet respite, you can begin your exploration along well-maintained hiking trails and, of course, towards the famous Neraidospilia (Fairy Cave), filled with natural, shimmering lakes that create a dreamlike setting.
History and Tradition in Every Corner

Vargiani is a village with a rich history, playing its own, albeit small, role in the Greek Revolution of 1821. Three heroes of the Liberation were born here: Ilias Antypatis, Nikos Balaouras, and Kapetan Liapis. The settlement, which once experienced great economic and commercial prosperity, aided the Greek resistance in every possible way. In fact, in 1824, very close to the village, the Battle of Panassaris took place, where the Greek army triumphed over the Ottomans of Dervish Pasha.

However, after the end of World War II, Vargiani gradually became deserted. Fortunately, in recent years, it has come back to life, as many residents from the capital, either with roots in the village or simply charmed by its beauty, choose it for their winter escapes.
Unforgettable Experiences Await You

While you're there, it's definitely worth seeing the cool Bourboula springs, a symbol of the village, flowing under tall plane trees, offering a refreshing paradise. You'll enjoy leisurely strolls among stone-built houses with magnificent views and outside the Church of Agia Paraskevi, the patron saint of the village, whom the few permanent residents honor every year on July 26th with a large and lively festival.

If you love hiking, follow the path that starts from the village springs and leads to the beautiful Neraidospilia, one of the most enchanting and mysterious places you'll ever see. However, it's good to remember that the route isn't very easy, so don't attempt to reach it unless you're an experienced hiker. In some parts, the path becomes very steep—in fact, in these specific sections, there's a rope tied to help you support yourself and proceed with greater ease. It's essential to wear very sturdy athletic shoes and comfortable clothing, and make sure to bring plenty of water. Upon reaching the cave (after a hike that takes about two hours), the sights you'll encounter will fully reward you.

If, on the other hand, you're not so keen on adventurous outdoor excursions and prefer the warmth of a lit fireplace with a steaming cup of coffee or a glass of wine with friends, Vargiani remains an ideal destination for ultimate relaxation and plenty of fresh air amidst the wonderful greenery of Fokida.
