Pavliani: A Living Myth in Oiti!
Built at an altitude of 1050 meters, at the entrance of the Oiti National Park and right next to the Pyre of Hercules, Pavliani is immersed in greenery, offering visitors an alpine landscape that captivates all year round. It is said that Pavliani got its name from its first inhabitants, who were the first to believe in the teachings of Apostle Paul. The village was initially built in a lower location, approximately where the village of Oiti is now located. Pavliani, however, as a location, has been known since antiquity. Near the present-day village and at an altitude of 1,800 meters, there are the ruins of the ancient Temple, which was dedicated to the mythical hero Hercules. This is the sacred place where Hercules was liberated from Deianira's tyrannical tunic on the pyre and became a demigod with the intervention of Zeus. At the entrance to Pavliani, visitors will encounter the memorial to all those – Greeks and Italians – who fell in the Battle of Pavliani in June 1942.
