Lilaia (Kato Agoriani): A Parnassus Treasure

Nestled at the northern foothills of the majestic Parnassus, Lilaia (formerly known as Kato Agoriani) is a beautiful, traditional village with around 200 welcoming residents. At an altitude of 320 meters, it awaits you with abundant, cool running waters and a vibrant, lush nature. The village keeps its traditional charm intact, with stone houses dominating the landscape and paved courtyards inviting you to take a moment to rest.

To the east and west of the village, you'll discover the two Kefalovrysa, springs of life whose crystal-clear waters feed the Boeotian Kifissos River. The cool shade of the ancient plane trees found there is the perfectly ideal spot to connect with nature, breathe in fresh air, and truly relax, far from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

The ancient traveler Pausanias admiringly describes ancient Lilaia: "Lilaia has a theater, an agora, baths. There are also sanctuaries of Apollo and one of Artemis with upright statues of Pentelic marble, of Attic workmanship." Imagine the splendor of its past!

Right next to the village, the Agorianitis River rushes down, whose waters once powered the village mills. You can still find their ruins today, silent witnesses to another era. The village earned its current official name thanks to the ancient Phocian city of Lilaia. Tradition says the city was named after Lilaia, one of the Naiads, daughter of the river god Kifissos.

The ancient city of Lilaia experienced its greatest flourishing between the 7th and 10th centuries BC. Its walls were square in shape and extended from the plain to the foothills of Parnassus. Its towers were numerous, and some still preserve their windows and battlements, bringing history to life. Artifacts from the archaeological site are proudly exhibited at the Archaeological Museum of Delphi and Athens. At the top of the hill, the central tower is accessible either on foot, following a path, or by jeep. The view from there is truly dazzling, as the entire plain and the surrounding picturesque villages spread out before you.

Sadly, Lilaia was completely burned down during the Occupation in 1943 by the conquerors, an event for which it rightfully earned the title of "Martyred Village." It's a place rich in history, natural beauty, and an embracing atmosphere!
